About Our Idea

Emily Darby & Maureen Kiesel are teachers in a K-2 public school in New Hampshire. We love books, kids and building community connections, so we figured, why not give free books away all summer long?

The purpose of this program is to provide children from birth to age nine access to free books throughout the summer.  We are both passionate about building school and community partnerships, creating home libraries, book floods, and lessening the gap between low socioeconomic families and high, in terms of access to children's literacy at home.  Although initially we thought this idea was unique, we have since realized that similar programs have been established in Seattle, Denver and Virginia.

During the early months of 2022, Books On Bikes New England became an official NH nonprofit corporation and was granted tax exempt status from the IRS!  So now, when you give to Books On Bikes New England, not only are you helping us to fund free books to children, you are getting a tax write off, as well!
